Recently, cleric supported organizations are seeking a constitutional ban on gay marriage in Croatia.
They’re trying to collect signatures so the government would be obligated to call a referendum. By Croatian law, if they collect signatures of 10% of registered voters, referendum needs to be called. More than half of needed signatures are already collected.Gay bashing is something that occurs often in Croatia. Anti-discrimination laws exist but it’s existence don’t change a single thing. If this gets implemented, situation will be even worse. It’s hard to grow up in a society where they teach you that homosexuality is a sin and all of this rhetoric is coming from the politicians, church and other influential people.
We cannot vote on human rights, they need to be protected by the state. Croatian constitution guarantees equality to all of its citizens but with this change, it won’t.
